This year's Azalea Festival Coin Show is set to offer activities for both children and adults alike, it has been suggested. The annual show, held in North Carolina, will allow people to view coins made from gold and other materials which are believed to date back to biblical times, Star News reports.

A unique gold medallion has been released in order to commemorate the 2010 Cherry Blossom viewing event in Osaka, Japan, it has been revealed. Measuring 40mm in diameter and weighing in at 95g, the gold piece has been released by the Japan Mint to honour the festival, which runs from April 14th to 20th.

Families are being invited to a historic gold mine to learn about the story behind the location of the first-known gold discovery in the United States, it has been revealed. The Reed Expansion Committee is inviting residents in the North Carolina area to drop in to the Reed Gold Mine between April 8th and 10th to hear about the first documented discovery of the precious metal in America, the Salisbury Post reports.

Chilean gold project returns “positive” drilling results

The latest round of exploration drilling at the Volcan gold project in Chile has returned samples that suggest the site's mineralisation could be richer than first thought, it has been announced. Andina Minerals said that its most recent work involved the drilling of 18 holes at the Dorado West area of the property to a total depth of 5,401 metres.

A recent auction saw a variety of gold items - including coins, watches and jewellery - sell for significantly more than their original estimates. The Christie's Jewels and Watches sale took place in Amsterdam yesterday (March 31st), with the top-selling gold lot consisting of a collection of 25 antique gold coins.

Gold nanoparticles used to detect melamine in milk

Scientists at the University of Miami (UoM) have harnessed gold nanoparticles to develop a simple and fast technique for detecting the dangerous chemical compound melamine in milk. Normally found in plastics and fertiliser, melamine was illegally added to some pet foods and dairy products from China in 2007 and 2008 to artificially boost their apparent protein content in testing.
