The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has the potential to become a significant player in the African gold mining sector, it has been claimed. Speaking at an event in Toronto held by the Canada-South African Chamber of Commerce, chairperson of Banro Simon Village said it is possible that the DRC will be seen as just as viable an investment decision as fellow gold-producing nations Ghana and Tanzania in ten years' time.

Gold medals have been awarded to eight international scholars and scientists who have excelled in their fields of work over the last year. The Saudi Arabia-based King Faisal Foundation's annual prizes of 22-c gold commemorative medals, money and a certificate were presented to experts from countries in Europe, the Middle East and North America by King Abdullah in a ceremony earlier this week.

Turkish gold exports total $1.1bn in 2009

Turkey exported $1.1 billion (£738 million) worth of gold jewellery to international markets last year, according to new figures. Statistics from the country's Export Promotion Center show that its biggest customer was the United Arab Emirates, which bought $348.9 million worth of gold jewellery.

Stratex announces advancement of gold projects

Gold exploration company Stratex International has announced that it managed to fast-track four of its major gold prospects in Turkey throughout 2009. Harry Miller, writing for Numismatic News, said that US Gold Eagle coins are proving to be a particularly popular choice, with a five per cent premium increase on the numismatic pieces noted.

An exhibition of items from the collection of 18th century historian Horace Walpole has opened in London, with a gold locket containing a lock of Mary Tudor's hair among the objects on show. The Horace Walpole and Strawberry Hill event at the V&A Museum runs until July 4th and features over 250 items from the collector's possessions.

Allied Gold resources top 2m ounces

Measures and indicated resources for Allied Gold's Pigiput and Pigibo deposits have increased by 170 to over two million ounces of gold following an estimate update, the company has announced. Resources at the Pigiput deposit were put at 41 million tonnes at 1.38 grams per tonne (g/t) of gold for a total of 1.82 million ounces of the precious metal.

Peru to boost gold mining investment, says minister

One of the world's biggest gold producers, Peru, is to increase investment in its mining industry by more than seven per cent this year as the country emerges from the economic downturn, the country's energy and mines minister has claimed. Speaking to Reuters at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention in Toronto, Pedro Sanchez said funding for mining operations is expected to top $3 billion (£2 billion) in 2010.

Gold mining research earns science honour

A scientist whose nanotechnology and metals research includes developing techniques to cleanse water of arsenic and remove mercury from the cyanide streams used in gold mining operations is to receive a major award recognising his accomplishments. Dr Manoranjan Misra of the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) has been chosen as the 2010 Regents' Researcher by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents.
